light meter calibration

Hot Lights

For this assignment, I wanted to experiment with some hot lights in my own apartment.

I started with basic candle light and tried to make it more interesting with a reflection. I used another candle out of frame to illuminate the bottom a little and cast the shadow on the left side. The confusing blue highlight is television-glow :P

My roommate Suzanne lit on one side by a stand-up lamp. Had a lot of trouble trying to get yellow out of her skin (from the shade), but I found pleasing results in a black-and-white edit.

For this one, I used a lighter that alternates red and blue lights when you flick it (the kind that's fun to fool your friends if you happen to be riding back seat!). She held it toward her neck for a 2 or 3 second shutter speed, and I just did a quick "on-off" with a little flashlight on her face. She could be Spiderwoman.

A little fun with smoke :)

It seemed most people worked in the studio for hot lights, so I thought I'd share my first GO in there!

I'm not used to working with studio lights/settings, so I brought my friend Melissa in to help me practice (and make sure I remembered how to work things!).

This was taken using the beauty dish.
